An Odd Thought

September 8, 2009 at 5:21 am | Posted in Goal Progress, Productivity | Leave a comment

All this morning I’ve felt grumpy and unmotivated, just like I did yesterday afternoon. As a result, I’ve been angry at myself for being lazy. Then, as I was looking at my to do list, I thought to look at what I’ve done this morning instead of skimming what remains to be done.

The results surprised me: I’ve been very productive this morning. I washed the dishes, wrote a substantial blog post, took out some plants that I’ve come to dislike, potted my charming new fern, read and commented on St. Augustine, and worked through the last remaining verses of James. All before 5:00 a.m.

As it turns out, I was punishing myself, not for behaving in a lazy fashion — lying around, sighing and staring at my cuticles — but rather for feeling like being lazy. I think we can all agree that that’s remarkably silly.

Just a little realization.

In other news, I’ve decided to try another week of spending money only on necessities, Sunday to Sunday. Last time, I managed six days, then slipped up and spent money on frivolity (plants and potting soil, a beading class and supplies). I’ll keep you all posted.
